From your picture to your cells.
Each square in the preview becomes one spreadsheet cell. The image is sampled to a manageable grid and reduced to a chosen color limit. The downloaded XLSX contains Artwork, Numbered template and Color key sheets, all generated in your browser.
- Upload a picture and choose a grid width. The image keeps its proportions, with both grid edges limited to 128 cells.
- Choose a color limit from 2 to 32. Transparent pixels below 50% opacity stay empty; other partial transparency is blended against white.
- Download the XLSX. Use Artwork as the reference, Numbered template for coloring, and Color key for the exact number of cells assigned to each reference color.
For a new image-based design, start with the pixel art maker. For a full-size mosaic, use Pixelate image.
BEFORE YOU MAKE
Your project questions.
Does this export a real Excel file?
Yes. It creates an Office Open XML .xlsx workbook, not a renamed CSV or an image pasted into a sheet. Each colored square is a cell fill.
What is included in the workbook?
Artwork contains the colored cell grid, Numbered template contains uncolored numbered cells, and Color key lists reference HEX colors and cell counts. Turn artwork numbers on or off before exporting.
Will it preserve all the colors in my photo?
No. Photos are sampled to the chosen grid and quantized to the chosen color limit. This makes a practical pattern. The workbook colors match the preview, not every pixel of the original photo.
Are the cells exactly square everywhere?
The workbook uses a 15-point row height and a 2.7-character column width as a near-square starting point. Spreadsheet software, default fonts and print settings can change the displayed proportions. Adjust them if needed.
Can I print the pattern?
The two grid sheets include landscape fit-to-page settings. Very large grids may print small. Check your spreadsheet app’s print preview and split or scale the pages as needed.
Are these commercial bead or thread color codes?
No. Colors are image-derived HEX references. For material-specific charts, use the dedicated Perler bead or cross stitch pattern makers.
