From a picture
to a weekend project.
A mosaic works best when its subject remains recognizable at a small size. Crop a portrait close to the face, give a logo a plain background, or choose a landscape with clear areas of light and shade. A larger grid preserves detail but also increases your piece count.
- Choose a width and compare the preview with a smaller color limit. Each occupied stud needs one plate.
- Open the numbered view to see the placement key. Print sections share the same numbers, so colors stay consistent.
- Check the parts CSV against your own collection or a supplier. Confirm the color of design 3024 and arrange your backing before building.

BEFORE YOU MAKE
Your project questions.
How do I turn a photo into a LEGO mosaic?
Upload a picture, set a width in studs and choose a maximum number of colors. The tool samples the image and matches it to 42 opaque LDraw reference colors. Download the numbered chart and parts list or print a sectioned plan.
What parts does the plan use?
Each colored cell represents one 3024 Plate 1 × 1. Transparent empty cells need no piece. Counts exclude baseplates, backing, frames and spare pieces. Verify each part and color combination before buying.
Are the color numbers LEGO part or BrickLink IDs?
No. The color identifiers come from LDraw.org LDConfig.ldr revision 2026-05-29. They are LDraw color IDs, not LEGO element IDs or BrickLink color IDs. The chart’s grid number is a separate key for placing pieces.
Are all listed colors available to buy?
Availability is not verified. A reference color does not guarantee that a 3024 plate is currently produced or stocked in that color. Check a supplier’s part and color listing and consider substitutions before ordering.
How large will my mosaic be?
The nominal stud footprint uses an 8 mm pitch: a 32-stud edge is about 25.6 cm. The tool shows width and height from the final grid. Add space for your backing and frame.
How are transparent images handled?
Pixels below 50% alpha become empty cells. Other translucent pixels blend onto white before color matching. The PNG chart marks empty cells with crosses, and these cells are excluded from the piece count.
What does dithering do?
Dithering scatters nearby colors to suggest smoother shading. It can help photographs but produces a more speckled design and more frequent color changes. Turn it off for logos and bold icons.
Can I print the build instructions?
Yes. Print / Save PDF includes the global color key, counted parts list and numbered chart sections of up to 32 by 32 studs. Global row and column numbers help you assemble adjacent sections.
