LIGHT THROUGH EVERY OPEN MESH
Filet Crochet Pattern Maker
Turn a simple motif, a photo or a name into an open-and-filled mesh chart. Find a clear silhouette, check your swatch, and follow the rows.

A little thread.
A clear silhouette.
Filet crochet draws with solid and open mesh. Simple lettering, hearts and bold silhouettes hold their shape better than a busy photograph at a small mesh count. Upload an image or start with a name, then adjust the threshold to keep the details you want.
- Choose enough mesh columns for the smallest gap in your motif. The filled outer border adds a stable edge within the selected dimensions.
- Make a classic 4-dc mesh swatch. Enter mesh columns and rows per measured span; the row count adjusts for your gauge.
- Read from Row 1 at the bottom. Follow the arrow and finish a complete row across all print sections before turning.
For colored single crochet instead of open mesh, use the tapestry crochet pattern maker. For embroidery charts and floss colors, try the cross stitch pattern generator.
Mesh and shared-boundary conventions follow the Yarnspirations filet crochet guide. Use US stitch terms throughout.
BEFORE YOU MAKE
Your project questions.
What does one square in a filet crochet chart mean?
One square is one mesh, not one stitch. In classic 4-dc mesh, a filled mesh spans four US double crochet posts and an open mesh uses dc, chain 2, dc. Adjacent meshes share a boundary dc: two filled meshes contain seven dc.
Can I turn a name into a filet crochet pattern?
Yes. Enter up to 24 characters using letters A–Z, numbers and spaces, then choose Make lettering chart. Adjust the mesh width and threshold until the strokes and openings are clear. You can also upload your own lettering image.
How does the starting chain work?
For W mesh columns, chain 3W + 3 when the first working mesh is filled, or 3W + 5 when it is open. The tool checks the actual first mesh for your chosen working hand and shows the chain count and first dc position.
Which direction do I read the chart?
Row 1 begins at the bottom. Right-handed odd rows read right to left and even rows left to right; left-handed reading reverses this. Row sequences are already listed in working order. Turn between complete rows.
What gauge should I enter?
Measure a swatch in meshes and mesh rows per 10 cm or 4 inches. Do not enter individual dc stitches as mesh columns. The tool uses this gauge to preserve image proportions and estimate panel size. Make and measure a swatch with your own yarn and hook.
Can I make an open background or invert the pattern?
Yes. Dark image areas become filled meshes by default; light areas become open meshes. Use Invert to switch them, and turn the filled outer mesh border on or off. Transparent image areas are treated as white before inversion.
What can I download?
Download a chart PNG and working-order row CSV, or open Print / Save PDF for the foundation instructions, a chart split into sections of up to 40 by 40 meshes, and every written row.
Does this generate a complete garment pattern?
It generates a flat rectangular chart for classic 4-dc mesh in US terms. It does not calculate garment shaping, yarn yardage or a complete garment construction.
